The Repeaters Syndrome

The Repeater’s Syndrome in Business refers to a cycle where entrepreneurs or business owners find themselves repeatedly facing the same challenges or setbacks, despite making efforts to move forward.

Have you not found situations / incidents repeating despite all our efforts and tries to stop them or ignore them?

Have you not observed how these repeat every now and then, typically a small incident repeats every 3-6 months and major ones every 12-18 years.

Have you tried to resolve this through all means but still found it repeating more often than not?

It can be a small incident like an unhappy client or a lost project or a monetary issue or cash flow problems or a health ailment or a stuck situation or a local issue, it can be from anything little relevant to something major ,important and hard hitting.

The Repeater’s Syndrome is a pattern where business owners unknowingly perpetuate the same problems, leading to stagnation and frustration. Let’s explore the concept more deeply:

Now picture this –

You are working so hard, waking up early following a fixed disciplined schedule and doing practically everything right from the business manual but in the end certain patterns are repeating and all the good work done is down in the drain taking us back to the starting point yet again.

Such is the repeaters syndrome – it will not spare anyone, its like a charging bull, will affect anyone and everyone in its way. And don’t we carry multiple such syndromes which impact us regularly. Yes, some might argue here that it’s a part of life and that’s how it is, we are pattern beings and will continue to do so. But then a more logical argument is Why are we doing this at all, why are we ploughing the field when all of this will go away by a wind storm that swirls across and comes up in circles.

Consider this –

A letter comes at your place and it misses you, the delivery is tried again the next day and once more, till finally a chit is left at your door that we have missed you, the delivery was attempted thrice. Now you begin thinking From where must this have come and you begin identifying the source.

So this is most important in repetitions from where its started whats the source and its precisely here that the solution too lies.

But what generally we do is we ignore and turn a blind eye. Different people handle it in different ways – some might try to force believe that all this is life, some may look into learning a new skill, strategy or plan to negate this, some turn to religious solace like indulging in havans, poojas, taking mannats and so, some law of attraction enthusiasts try affirmations, some might blame the other and what not. But you see, the end result is the same it will keep repeating.

Can a human body survive with repeated formation of cancer cells.

Are there solutions?

We have got accustomed to the addressing surface-level symptoms instead of identifying and resolving the root causes of their problems.

And these need deeper instrospections, but alas! Who has the time in this fast paced world, a phone call here or the beep of a social media post there and the mind wavers into distractions away from our own

Lets get to understand this better.

Repetitions are a product or outcome of the right brain and emanates from there.

These are typically unfinished or unresolved things that have now formed traits and keep repeating.

Its difficult or practically impossible to find its origin through only conscious effort or logical thinking or left brain, you need to enter into the right brain domain.

It will keep seeking your attention and focus as these repetitions are compulsive and keep hitting back in quick intervals, they strike fast and more harder.

And these need to be resolved now or later, the sooner the better as the damage is less.

Example – If a shoe is regularly troubling you and your feet are paining what do you do, change / repair shoe or change feet.

Once the shoe is set right does it trouble you, it means when we address the root cause we are free from the repeated troubles. Hence the key is to address the roots and this is the only solution.

Learning has to happen, its upon knowing as to where this has come from. This revelation is the game changer, all other efforts are managing, pushing and living with the devil.

Some characteristics of Repeater’s Syndrome

Recurring Challenges: Issues like cash flow problems, stagnant growth or client retention occur repeatedly or any negative situation keeps repeating. These peg you back to square one, typically if you see there are multiple recurring challenges.

Copy-Paste Solutions: Applying the same strategies or approaches without analyzing why they failed in the first place. So many simply blindly look into ready made solutions and that’s the saddest part as there are no generic solutions here, everyone is different and there are no one formula fits all type here.

Lack of Awareness: A failure to recognize underlying patterns, often due to being too focused on daily operations. There is so many in this zone who don’t even observe these happenings in their business unless it escalates into a huge issue one day.

8 reasons why It happens

Ignoring the Root Cause: Without identifying the true source of the problem, symptoms persist.

Resistance to Change: Entrepreneurs often stick to familiar methods due to fear of uncertainty or lack of alternative knowledge.

Superficial Fixes: Quick fixes might provide temporary relief but don’t solve the deeper issues.

Fear of Change: Many entrepreneurs stick to what’s familiar, even if it’s not working. Change requires risk and discomfort, which can be daunting.

Overconfidence in Past Successes: Assuming that strategies that worked before will always work again, without adapting to changing market dynamics.

Reactive Decision-Making: Constantly addressing immediate issues without a proactive plan to prevent them.

Weak Foundations: Problems like unclear business goals, lack of vision or improper systems set the stage for recurring failures.

Band-Aid Solutions: Opting for quick fixes (like cutting costs or increasing workload) instead of solving systemic issues.

3 signs you’re stuck in the cycle

Déjà Vu Moments: Feeling like you’ve solved a problem only to face it again in a few months. And you feel Oh this same happened some time back.

Plateaued Growth: Your business isn’t scaling despite consistent effort and this is the outcome of a viscous repeated trait.

Recurring Customer Complaints: Similar complaints surface repeatedly, signaling unresolved issues. It can be repeating customer complaints or any other persisting patterns.

The Repeater’s Syndrome is not a failure, it’s a signal, in fact not being able to recognize its message or its roots is a failure and that’s where most entrepreneurs fail. It points to unresolved patterns or traits that need attention. And if you do not the message becomes more loud and prominent giving rise to more troubles and harder situations as time passes. Haven’t you noticed things becoming more and more difficult each time a pattern gets repeated.

Moreover if not attended timely, these slowly and steadily expand to affect not just the rational business outcomes but also our mental emotional states where slowly and surely we lose control of ourselves, our work leading to stagnation, frustration and re doing, like repeating a class.

A real example which is one of the case studies for me

Two years ago, Raja (name changed), a seasoned entrepreneur, met me at a business event. Our first conversation was casual, but it quickly turned into a series of meetings that uncovered profound revelations about his business journey. Raja’s story isn’t uncommon—he faced

Failed payments. Unprofitable ventures. Cranky clients.

Every time he attempted to move forward, something pulled him back. During our discussions, we unraveled these patterns, and each revelation was like a bulb on in his mind. But despite the clarity, Raja decided to wait and watch. After all, he had backup plans—safety nets that offered a false sense of security.

Fast forward two years.

A few days ago, Raja called and invited me to his home. His voice was weary, he seemed unwell.  When I arrived, he shared the harrowing story of his last two years—a series of repeated blows that had escalated into a full-blown crisis.

The same challenges persisted and repeated, but this time, they amplified. A failed payment here, an uncooperative client there—soon, it spiraled into a devastating loss of ₹50 lakhs. This happened suddenly but wasn’t sudden—it was the culmination of years of unresolved repetitive issues. And as if the universe wasn’t done making its point, this catastrophic loss was followed by something worse: a massive heart attack.

Raja sat across from me, visibly scarred—not just by the physical ordeal of surgery but by the realization that these events were preventable. He could have acted two years ago when the patterns were clear and the solutions were within reach. Instead, he allowed the devil, the known enemy “Repeater’s Syndrome” to foster and it grew into an unmanageable beast.

Sad but that’s how it is, this is how life and the law of repetitions function.

Action has to be immediate and quick not allowing it to repeat because if it does we become the syndrome itself.

3 reasons why we fall prey to it?

Denial – This can’t happen again.

Backup Plans –  A false sense of security in temporary solutions.

Postponing – Waiting for another time to act.

The trait is a mere tip of the iceberg which is so much deeper than what is visible right now. And its not the tip that’s to be negotiated but the whole iceberg which is so very deep.

The Lesson – Act Before It’s Too Late

The Repeater’s Syndrome is a silent killer. It doesn’t announce its arrival or its intention to wreak havoc. It lurks in the background, quietly eroding your business and your peace of mind.

Only through awareness, right action and a willingness to explore deeper causes (rather than mere effects), business owners can end this viscous cycle and achieve true transformation.

And once you are aware there is always a guide, a coach who appears as they say when a student is ready a master appears.

Are you living with the enemy in your business? It’s time to break free.

Here is wishing you all a Happy New Year full of prosperity and abundance.
